Presumably, this is meant to show that she needs rescuing from a bad dancer, so "help" her by cutting in. It seems less humorous if she needs help escapting an abuser. Incidentally, there's a secret hand signal now that communicates a plea for such help to those who recognize it.
I took it as something in-between. A young woman agreeing to a dance, either willingly or not be rude, and now regrets the choice due to how close he is or what he is whispering in her ear.
