It appears Spring Training. Quick research has the New York Giants training in Phoenix, Arizona Municipal Stadium and Sanford, Florida Memorial Stadium in the 1950's It is a home jersey with the "Giants" across the jersey as opposed to "New York" which would be an away jersey so it is a home ballpark.

And actually considering their miniscule salaries back then would have more reason to than the guys today making megabucks.
Do you know the baseball field where that picture was taken? It looks like a little league field not a MLB field.
