I always avoid these. If I wanted to check out on my own I would just go online. When I physically am at a store I expect respectful and helpful interaction with employees.
I gotcha. They can be a real time saver though if you are familar with the machines (which anybody will be after one try) and do not get behind somebody that can't do it without assistance.

and god forbid they try to pay cash at the self-checkout!!
