"Bludgeoned to death"

Can you bludgeon someone....but not "to death"?

Is it like drowning? Is "death" the threshold for the term "bludgeon" to apply?

If a person gets "bludgeoned" but makes a miraculous recovery within an inch of their life, were they still bludgeoned? Or something else then?

Always been curious.
