Wow, this may be an indication of where my mind lies. The first thing that occurred to me wasn't that her son and his girlfriend were living without benefit of clergy. Rather, he was gay (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Another thing occurred to me: why, in this day and age, are there NOT cards that recognize this style of living?
Then another thing occurred to me: I would think Mom could have been a little more sensitive in choosing a card where she didn't have to scratch out "wife." She seems to be a bit of a shrew.
Then another another thing occurred to me: methinks Mom is trying to send a snide message to her son (gay or otherwise).
OK, that's it. All this occurring has left me with a headache. I think I'll take a nap.

Apparently the circusmtances regarding this card involved an unmarried heterosexual couple living together.
I would clasiify this card as "passive-aggressive" with the emphasis on aggressive.
