Yet more evidence that "I'm Probably Not All There": When the self-checkout machine thanks me for shopping at 'X', I always pop off with a cheerful "You're welcome."
It would probably be too expensive to equip those machines with voice-recognition technology just to exchange pleasantries with customers. Plus then they would be expected to handle complaints; irate and otherwise.
