I don't know. I just did.
The first question/task for any announcer being interviewed to call a NASCAR race?
"Scream 'Three Wide' for us!"
Also I can't really put my finger on it for some reason but Juan Pablo Montoya doesn't seem to belong here.
It could be just me though.

Okay. . . so my husband sent me over here to comment on this post that was obviously written for me.
First of all, I feel compelled to remind you that it is not *A* NASCAR race, it is *THE* NASCAR race. No other race was on last night, thus the use of the definite article "the" would have been preferred over the use of the indefinite article "a" in your blog title.
(I really will get back to baking, or sewing, or something else soon, I promise!)
But the true NASCAR fan in me is forced to deal with the bigger issue here.
YOU CHOSE A PICTURE WITHOUT JEFF BURTON. He would be in *the* #31 car, not just *a* car.
:)
Oh, and I don't like the guy with the name Montoya, either. Nothing personal. . . I just don't like his attitude.
That is cool. I did know that you were a NASCAR fan. I do see your point as to the "A" vs "The" thing.
Up until maybe 5 years ago, I would have classified myself as an Indy Car fan as I have probably been to about 6-7 Indy 500s and would see them at the Michigan International Speedway every year when they came but they stopped coming here so I began losing interest and probably my status as a fan.
I went to one NASCAR race at MIS about 10 years ago. I found the differences in fans to be immense. At NASCAR, there is total allegiance to specific drivers. With Indy, there is a little of that but not too much. Many of the "fans" were given tickets by one of the auto companies or are auto type guys (like engineers) who seemed interested in the mechanics and speed of the cars. They tend to root for whoever is the fastest. That probably sounds unbelievable to a NASCAR fan but it is true.
Personally I just like racing and never had an allegiance to a driver or a team. There are probably 3 reasons why I never gravitated to NASCAR.
1. Didn't grow up with it.
2. The cars are 30-40 MPH slower and I could definitely sense this at the only race I went to.
3. I don't really like the fact that often you need help from a teammate or another driver to pass someone. That happens sometimes but much less often in Indy. There if you have the horsepower and your car is handling well, you just make a pass.
Ok, babbling I know.
I know nothing about Jeff Burton other than what he looks like.
Why Jeff Burton?
Genuinely curious.
Sorry for the delay in answering. Mark told me you'd responded yesterday. . . and in our "labor day" stupor, I didn't check the computer.
Why Jeff Burton? Gosh, I really don't know. I guess he just strikes me as a genuinely good family man. He's well-respected by his fellow drivers. So much so, they call him the "mayor" of NASCAR.
Okay. . . I'll admit it. He's kinda cute, too.
A couple years back, probably in 2007 or so, a couple of the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) drivers put Down syndrome awareness ribbons on their cars. Well, you KNOW that's going to strike a chord in my heart.
JB is a RCR driver -- although in 2007, he may have been with Roush Fenway. (Yes, it DOES scare me that I know all this stuff)
Growing up in the Chicago 'burbs, I knew NOTHING of stock car racing. I endured Indy racing - but never really got into it.
Back in 2001, after having lived in the South for 5 years or so, I started paying attention to NASCAR. At one point, Edison and I ventured into Knoxville to see one of the Dale Earnhardt (Sr.) #3 cars. I have pictures of it - probably not digital. But, it was cool nonetheless.
During the 2003-2004 season, we did a Fantasy Racing thing with a bunch of guys from church. Yep, I was the only girl -- loved it.
In 2003, we attended our first race at Bristol. FELL IN LOVE with the sport. And, although I would much rather experience a race at say, Michigan, Atlanta, or Talladega - Bristol is awesome.
We've since attended one other Nationwide race. Loved it.
So, I'm a fanatic. My sister (lives in Owosso) swears I'm a redneck. She's probably right. . . although the sight, smell, and ICK of chewing tobacco (in or out of the can) makes me ILL. So, I've still got some social graces about me.
There you have it - my NASCAR story in a nutshell!! :)
Angie
p.s. I nearly forgot - Caroline was born on Dale Earnhardt's birthday (senior - may he rest in peace). The fact that I know, and share that information, scares me.
Angie,
Thanks for the perspective.
Maybe I will root for Jeff Burton too. I usually root for the Indy guys, Stewart, Hornish or Montoya the few times a year I catch a race.
If you have the opportunity, you may want to experience a large track. Indy cars have a similar small track like Bristol in Milwaukee and it seems like the cars are always turning. On a larger track, you can tell that some cars and drivers are better on the straights and some on the turns. I would also throw out the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as it is not banked and the racing there is a little different. That said, I know road trips like this are a bit difficult with a family.
I hope you had a good Labor Day.
Kevin
Thanks, Kevin! We had a decent Labor Day -- it was low-key, and that was an awesome way to spend the day.
We actually visited the Indianapolis Speedway a couple years ago, on our way back to TN from a trip to MI. :)
I would love to go to the Brickyard at Indy one of these days. Caroline would NEVER stand for the noise -- but her big brother and daddy would! :)
Glad to hear.
On the noise thing, I brought my boy Alex to MIS for an Indy Race when he was 4 years old. I brought some ear plugs for him but he did not like the way they felt in his ears and did not want to wear them and he could not handle the noise. We watched about half the race in the stands and the other half we visited the team trailers and ate so to give his ears a break.
He is 13 now and asked to go back to the track a year or two ago and I told him the story and he doesn't believe it happened.
Caroline would not like it.
No, she would not. A sudden cough, or loud laugh causes tears at our kitchen table.
Poor thing nearly came unglued when Mark had a cold last week.
So. . . she'll definitely be watching (ha!) from the comforts of home.
OH!!! And my other favorite thing at a NASCAR race? When the jets fly over.
Love it!
