Gotta watch yourself, you know
Mayir Nissim, entertainment reporter for digitalspy.com reports that an Islamic cleric in Malaysia, Nooh Gadot has banned Muslims from wearing Manchester United football (soccer) shirts because of what he believes is a devil emblem on the shirt.
"This is very dangerous. As a Muslim, we should not worship the symbols of other religions or the devils."
"Even if it is a gift, we should decline it. It is even more sinful when people realize this is wrong and still buy these jerseys to wear."
He added that no fatwa (a non-binding religious opinion) was needed on the shirts as the garments were clearly not allowed for Muslims.
Another Islamic cleric in Malaysia, Harussani Zakari agreed: "Yes of course in Islam we don't allow people to wear this sort of thing. Devils are our enemies, why would you put their picture on you and wear it? You are only promoting the devil."
Hmmmm. To each his own I guess.
That said, I am sure glad I am tucked away here in this tiny obscure corner of the internet.
Who knows how many unintended insults they would discover if these Malaysian guys found their way here! What if they had no concept of sarcasm? I don't get the impression they do that kind of thing well.
Who wants several fatwas issued against them?
It would be very inconvenient to say the least.
Just ask Salman Rushdie.
(Now if you don't mind, I am going to be laying a little low for a while here. Can't be too careful, you know)
