Brandon Formby of the Dallas Morning News reports that 11-year-old Casey Rogers from Terrell, Texas has won a Kraft Foods' essay contest for kids who have made a difference in their communities.
His prize? He gets to trigger the April 11th implosion that demolishes Texas Stadium.
As background, Casey Rogers was a foster child when he first went to live with Russell and Shelly Rogers a few weeks after he was born. Russell and Shelly liked him so much they adopted him when he was 1.
Approximately three years ago, Casey and his dad were at a Burger King in downtown Dallas when a homeless man approached them in the parking lot and his father shooed him away. Casey asked why he did this and his dad explained that the man likely would not spend any money given to him on the right things.
This got Casey to thinking of the love and support that his parents gave him when they adopted him. "I was just like, look how great y'all helped me," Casey said. "Why don't I help them."
This spurred Casey to action and he founded the charity Casey's Heart through his father's ministry, Trinity Life Baptist Church. Casey along with his neighbors, church members and his Boy Scout troop collected food and clothing etc and Casey and his friends go back to the same parking lot in downtown Dallas once or twice a month to distribute it to the needy.
Geez! What a kid!
I think it is safe to say that Casey was a deserved winner of the Kraft Foods' essay.
As to the stadium implosion, Casey says, "Oh, man, I'm excited. Real excited."
Go Casey! Implode away!
One tip though, Casey. Have them make sure everybody is out of the stadium before you press the button. Have them double and triple check every nook and cranny in that place. Can't be too sure, you know.
Oh and one last thing. Stand back a little.
I hear these implosions get a little dusty.
(I have seen a few on television)
