So if these are "Gay Love" stories, does that mean that Mr. Snowman is losing his male lover to that man-stealing beyotch? No wonder he's upset!
Or, alternatively, is Snowy shocked because he realizes that the alleged "man" is in fact a butch lesbian? This is the one that appeals to me.
Before posting this, I wondered about this interesting cover.
Actually, I think it is a simpler explanation. I think it is an old magazine using the old meaning (happy) usage of the word "gay".
I think the snowman reaction is a reaction to (any) two people kissing in public. Again, an old (and quaint) concept.
That said, your theories are definitely possible and I did initially consider your second explanation (before reading yours).
Oh well, no matter which theory is correct -- why does a snowman have claws? who does he think he is -- Wolverine?
